Ulrik López
the air between things

at Guertin's Graphics
44 Read Rd. Red Hook, NY 12571

Opening:
July 10th, 2 - 6 PM

We are excited to announce the opening reception of the air between things, a solo exhibition by Ulrik López at Guertin's Graphics. For the air between things, Lopez shows recent works addressing his collaborative practice as that of kinship and protection. Like the ancestors that are constantly around us, our kin help us be aware that we did not make ourselves. Our tribe echoes our efforts like a mirror, and our hands constantly grow more fingers. The objects in this exhibition explore the hexes that are built during his collaborations.

Born in Mexico City in 1989. Ulrik López lives and works between Mexico City and San Juan, Puerto Rico. He received a Bachelor's (BFA) degree in Sculpture and a minor degree in Industrial Design in 2013 by the Escuela de Artes Plásticas de Puerto Rico and is currently part of the master program (MFA) at Bard College. He has participated in recent residencies such as Delfina Foundation, London and Pivô Pesquisa, São Paulo. Lopez’s work takes objects and motifs addressed by fields that study human activity through material and cultural production, mainly archeology and anthropology from the Americas, to approach different notions pertaining world views, the ritual, myths, craft and the objects and characters that populate them. These approximations are mostly assumed in a very amateurish way, as a researcher, an archeologist or a forensics, who in some sense makes witnesses out of objects (things, images, places, sounds). A great part his practice entails arranging various sort of fragments, whether their physical or immaterial, concepts or intuitions, eternal or ephemeral, sculpture or drawing, architecture or dance, to examine themes around traditions and revised forms of folklore; and some ways oppose traumas from colonialism.
